MetroCard is the method of Automated Fare Collection.
On January 1st 1994 The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, of New York City, Issued the first MetroCard. The fare medium is a plastic card about the same width and height as a credit card, though thinner. The system is presently being used to pay fares on subways and buses in big sities. The The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has hopes of the card eventually being used as electronic cash at retail establishments throughout the city.
